About Research and Innovation in B.C.

British Columbia is home to a wide variety of technology associations, research institutions and innovative industry leaders. Our main strengths lie in the clusters of life sciences, technology, clean technology and natural resources.The Province has committed more than $1.7 billion to support research and innovation since 2001.

Research and development leads to innovation, commercialization and increased productivity, which are essential for B.C. to thrive and stay competitive in the global economy. By investing in people and ideas, the provincial government is working to enhance the competitiveness of knowledge-based industries, build a sustainable economy and increase prosperity throughout B.C.

Guided by the B.C. Research and Innovation Strategy, government works to promote and advance innovation throughout all regions of the province, focusing especially on the province’s priority research areas. The Ministry of Small Business, Technology and Economic Development works with various innovation organizations and post-secondary institutions to support researchers, students and industry.
