Major Research Organizations

Genome BC

Genome BC invests in and manages genomics and proteomics research projects. It works with government, universities and industry to help B.C. become a leader in genomic research, and provides services to facilitate commercialization. Its major investors are Genome Canada and the provincial government.

TRIUMF

TRIUMF is Canada’s national laboratory for nuclear and particle physics research and related sciences. Located on the University of British Columbia campus in Vancouver, TRIUMF is owned and operated as a joint venture by a consortium of seven Canadian universities. It provides scientific and engineering leadership, bringing together interdisciplinary talent, technical resources and commercial partners.

NEPTUNE Canada

NEPTUNE Canada is a cabled ocean observatory operated by Ocean Networks Canada. NEPTUNE, which stands for North-East Pacific Time-Series Underwater Networked Experiments, is the world’s first regional-scale underwater ocean observatory that is directly connected to the Internet. It gathers live data from the seafloor and transmits it to a data system at the University of Victoria, where it is available to researchers around the world.

MITACS

MITACS, which stands for Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems, is part of Canada’s Networks of Centres of Excellence program. The organization links business, government, non-profits and universities to develop tools to support the growth of the knowledge-based economy. MITACS holds skills enhancement workshops and technical training events; it also supports internships and outreach activities. It funds various mathematical sciences research projects throughout Canada.

Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research

The Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research is the provincial support agency for health research in B.C. The organization creates an environment that attracts talented researchers to B.C., and fosters collaborations between government, health systems and academic institutions. Its goal is to develop B.C. as a leader in health research.

Centre for Drug Research and Development

The Centre for Drug Research and Development helps to advance medical research into clinical developments and commercialization. Its goal is to build a collaborative research infrastructure and increase research and development capacity in B.C.

Brain Research Centre

The Brain Research Centre is an independent research facility, operated by Vancouver Coastal Health and the University of B.C.’s faculty of medicine. Its focus is on translating advances in knowledge about the brain into new treatments.

Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions

The Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions is a collaboration between the University of Victoria, the University of B.C., Simon Fraser University and the University of Northern B.C. It was launched by the government of B.C. to develop innovative climate change solutions. 

BCNET

BCNET is a non-profit organization that provides high-speed optical network capabilities, often called advanced networks, to B.C.’s higher education and research institutions. Advanced networks upport experimental and collaborative efforts in education and research being conducted across the province and around the world. 

WestLink Innovation Network

WestLink Innovation Network is a member-based organization that connects professionals in academia and industry, with the goal of moving Canadian innovation from the labs and into final products in the marketplace.
